Much to the disappointment of many of us, Tom Brady is not done yet.
Yes, I was one of them. I truly believed that Tom Brady and the New England Patriots were going to see a drop off in production this season. Like many others, I thought the loss of Wes Welker was going to be a huge problem for the Patriots. After watching Danny Amendola and Tom Brady work together Friday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers I am a changed man. Now I’m not ready to say that the loss of Wes Welker is not going to be felt at some point this season, but I will say that Amendola is a future star in this Patriot offense.
It was with great pain that I watched Tom Brady connect on 11 out of 12 passes that looked like they had GPS tracking devices on them. There are so many things that make him one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, one of them is the pin point accuracy of his throws. [dropcap][/dropcap]I was hoping that Brady was starting to lose his fire for the game after celebrating his 36 birthday, that has not happened. A telling moment came early in Friday night’s game when the Patriots center jumped off sides for a penalty, Brady was seen lashing out at the lineman and scolding him like a child for his mistake. New England Patriot players work hard not to let Brady down, he expects his receivers to know their routes and his presence elevates the entire team.
A glaring difference between Tom Brady and most other NFL quarterbacks is the amount of time it takes for him to get rid of the ball after the snap. I don’t have any earth shattering stats to throw at you here, I don’t need them, I know what I see. Brady does not hesitate in the pocket, he anticipates his receivers moves, based on the defensive coverage and the play called, and makes the throw. Brady’s football mind just works better than most he makes quick reads and decisions that make him like a man among boys many times.
Yes, I was one of them, thinking that the Patriots could be headed for one of the toughest seasons that they have had in many years, but I’m not so sure now. In addition to Tom Brady looking as sharp as ever, and the Amendola connection looking tight, there are other questions that seem to have been answered as well. Undrafted Free Agent Tight End Zach Sudfeld looks like he is ready to step up and help fill the void left by Aaron Hernandez. The running game looks very good right now for the Patriots and I think we can expect a very balanced offensive attack from them.
The only area that I am not sure about is the defense, particularly in pass coverage. This may be a year when opposing teams are able to put up points against the Patriots, but I have no doubt that Tom Brady and this group of offensive weapons is going to outscore their opponents on most game days.
So strap on your cleats AFC East, Tom Brady has not left the building, and the championship still goes through Foxborough and the New England Patriots.
